Drawing is very good mindfulness training. Especially
drawing with ink. The line has to be perfect or at least good the first time.
We cannot muck around with erasers or white-out. So we have to observe with a
clear mind. And draw with a clear hand. We must breathe out while we draw the
line. We must be sure of the line just before we put it on the paper. It is
unbelievable how deluded we can become while observing an object or a living
thing. We believe the form is so, but it is in fact such. We are sure a line
slants down, while in fact it slants up. Only objective observation reveals how
things really are. To know how things really are one has to explore the empty
space around the object. Negative space is, like in meditation, extremely
important in drawing and painting. Cezanne started with drawing the empty
space, so that the forms appeared.
I love drawing my cat. I can look at him for days and then
suddenly embark on a drawing spree. I try to keep the lines to a minimum.
